The 7 Worst Foods for Your Brain

The brain is the most invaluable organ in the whole body, no contest. It is, simply put, the pilot of your body. If one thinks of it, we are brains that have an anthropomorphic body as their host, allowing them to lead a life with no fear of being physically damaged. Sometimes, we end up eating some very unhealthy foods that may affect the brain negatively, thus damaging it in a way that may be irreparable.

Here are 7 foods that have a very harmful effect on the brain that can even lead to permanent brain damage.

1. Trans Fats

Granted, not all fats affect the brain negatively. Some of them are quite beneficial for it, such as omega-3 fatty acids. Trans fat, commonly found in animal products such as meat and dairy products, damages the brain in its natural form. Once industrialized, its effects are bolstered. That canned beef or jerky we all know and love can end up causing Alzheimer’s, dementia or even brain inflammation.

2. Sugary Drinks

Soft drinks, energy drinks. and the likes are filled with a huge amount of concentrated fructose. Fructose renders its regular consumers prone to several mental disabilities such as learning difficulties, delayed brain to neuron response, Alzheimer’s and Dementia. Aside of brain damage, these drinks can lead to several physical diseases, prime examples of which being Diabetes Type 2, increased blood pressure and increased cholesterol.

3. Refined Carbs

Originally made from processed grains, refined carbs are present in most of our favorite foods, starting with bread and going all the way to pastries, and even more. Carbs are broken down into sugar in the body, thus increasing the amount of glucose in the blood and disrupting the liver’s function of providing the body with energy. Not only does this affect the body negatively, but it also affects the brain.

Studies have shown that refined carbs cause memory-based issues, brain inflammation, and dementia. People who eat refined carbs regularly are noted to score lower on intelligence tests, have holes in their memory, thus risking memory impairment.

4. Processed and Packaged Foods

Processed food can no longer be considered beneficial, for all of the nutrients in it have grown obsolete due to over-industrialization. In exchange, you get flavor-amplifiers, sugar, salt, and fats to compensate for that. As discussed above, these components are detrimental for the brain’s health.

It is advised to use mostly organic ingredients while cooking. Granted, our era’s style of life does not offer a lot of time, but that does not mean that we should depend solely on packaged and processed foods, for that could prove to be extremely harmful for the brain and body in the long run. If fat and sugar accumulate around vital organs such as the brain, then there is a risk that the brain tissue will be damaged due to the blood-brain barrier being punctured, thus allowing these alien matters to invade the brain.

5. Alcohol

This is self-explained, really. Alcohol is very famous for clouding the brain and dulling the senses. Just a sip and the brain is already affected, which speaks volumes about how dangerous it really is.

Alcohol is noted to shrink flesh, and what is the brain if not flesh? Regular consumption of alcohol is very dangerous for the brain, for this will eventually lead to the shrinkage of the brain, which will create several problems for the patient as they will have several vitamin deficiencies and, eventually, the emergence of Korsakoff’s Syndrome, which is basically very serious brain damage that starts with memory loss and ends with random bouts of blindness.

6. Fish High in Mercury

Fish is, bar none, the healthiest meat one can consume. It is rich in Omega-3 acids and vitamin B12, magnesium and iron. The only problem with fish lies in the fact that some breeds of fish can be rich in mercury, which is very harmful for the brain. This is due to the fact that most fish live by feeding on other fish, which leads to the mercury in their prey remaining in their body, for mercury does not leave the body. It accumulates. Therefore, to avoid Dementia and other cerebral deficiencies, it is encouraged to avoid breeds such as sharks, tuna, swordfish, king mackerel, tilefish , and orange roughy, or at least moderate one’s consumption of them. This ought to allow us not to accumulate a lot of mercury in our tissue, which may lead to several severe diseases that might lead to an arduous and needlessly difficult ordeal that may end with death, for brain diseases are no trifling matter.

7. Aspartame

Whereas some people abandon the consumption of sugar altogether, others cannot do that, which leads them to embracing the use of artificial sweeteners such as aspartame. Do not believe what the manufacturers say, for aspartame is far from being safe, as it had been shown that aspartame is the catalyst behind several cognitive and behavioral issues that have been noted to be due to brain damage.

Aspartame’s effects are so severe and quick that they can take effect in less than 10 days, which is a feat described by researchers as “frightening and unprecedented.” Any products with the label “diet” on them that use aspartame as a sugar substitute have been linked to cerebral diseases such as dementia, Alzheimer’s and many more. Even so, the FDA considers aspartame safe, but its users are required by the law to add labels to the products that display its presence and concentration in the former.

Conclusion

It is a given that a healthy diet plays a huge part in maintaining a good health, and this goes for mental health, as well, for all mental diseases are caused by some sort of brain damage, no matter the severity. As such, avoidance or certain items and moderation of the intake of others is heavily encouraged, for this means that one can live a healthy life with nothing to worry about but what tomorrow has to hide and what it entails.
